First Initial Blog

My topic of choice is helping poverty families feel important in their child's education. I would discuss High Scope, nutrition, and smaller ratios under this topic. Parents need to feel important and be a part of the development of their young child. The center I am doing my internship with a nationally accredited center. The children are four years old and being prepared to enter Kindergarten in a few months. I met with a lead teacher and her assistant for my interviews. They shared their biggest concerns. The number one concern was getting the parents involved. So many parents are busy today going back to school or working and they just do not take the time to come volunteer in the center. I suggested maybe an in home based program to help with the very busy parents. I also suggested having meeting at the local college some of the parents attend.

I work at a local Head Start just about ten miles from the center I will be doing my internship at. I am very familiar with my own center but each and every Head Start center is unique. I have worked with three year old children for ten years at Head Start. Parent involvement is very difficult to obtain at our center as well.

I am very unsure of my research topic at this point but the interview did help me get my brain rolling. I hope all my wonderful smart classmates will help me think of an excellent research paper topic. I look forward to helping some of you as well.

  1. Hello April,
This is a fantastic top to write on. I was considering somethings along the line of this topic myself. This topic is great because it is a pressing issue in most communities today. From my experience< i know that parent involvement is the most important to a child's education. most families in the poverty stricken areas just seen their children to school, pick them up and have little to no interaction with the teachers at all. if more paremts got involved, i believe that the chilren would be more eager to learn material because their parents would be their.

I have always been a firm believe that everything starts in the home. If parents got more involved, it would be very beneficial in the future of the child.

  2. I think this is going to be a great topic. Parent involvement is extremely important. I have found that there are many parents who want to be a part of their childs education and development, but feel they are not adequate enough to do so. Some parents have a language barrier. Some feel intimidated by it. On the other hand there are some parents who do not recognize the importance of their involvement in their child's education. Your topic has great potential. Good luck to you.

  3. I love this idea. This is actually one area that can be changed with minimal funding or legislation, and primarily through educating the educator at a mass level. What ideas did you have in mind for advocating this topic?

  4. One of my topics is parent involvement. Today, it seems to be hard to get parents involved because they all seem so busy. I have noticed that they do want to be involved with their child, but their work seems to be mroe imnportant. I know this topic would be an excellent one to advocate for. Best of luck!!

  5. This topic seems to be very popular. The poverty level is getting worse and who better to help the children, but their parents. I wish we could break the cycle from repeating itself. Parents who are born from poverty seem to pass that along to their children, it is so hard to watch.

  7. I feel that you are on the right track and that is a very good passion to have. Provety is world wide and we need more advocates like you to step up and make a difference. I feel that my idea of helping foster children through literacy. language, home activities seem to have a lot in common maybe we could bump heads and become the greatest Advocates ever

  8. Hi April, im thinking your idea about a in home based program for parents is a genius idea!I mean really genius!!As an early childhood professional myself I see how difficult it is to find the the time for single parents and working families to stop and participate throughout the day and its not because most of them dont want to but because their schedules are not allowing them too. I think a program like this one would be very attractive to parents and it will provide parents with a more convienient way to be involved with their childs education. I think you should focus on supporting family involvement this in this form of way. Maybe and idea could be to do a survey to the parents or some parents to see how they would feel about collaborating with schools on a more personal level.

  9. Hello April,

I think that it is wonderful that you want to start a homebased advocacy program. Many parents can use the help and this is only the beginning to something much larger.

    Good for you!

  10. I agree with you post. I feel that Homebased advocacy program would be very helpful to many. The school that I have my internship with just in the classroom there are 4 boys were the fathers are not in the picture they don't have any male role model.
    We all need help sometimes!

  11. Hi April,
I believe that parent involvement is very important for not only the teachers but the child as well. When children see that their parents are also getting involved within their classroom it makes them more motivated and willing to do more and learn. Yes, you are right, many families have to work two jobs and is making it very hard for them to get involved within their child's classroom because by the end of the day they may not even have that energy. I think its very said that this is occurring and parents not realizing how important it is for them to get involved.
